Review – Coming Back STRONGER

One thing I can use a whole lot less of in 2011 is sports figures in the news. Tiger, Lebron, Brett Farve, you name it and I have just grown tired of the entire franchise and spectacle. That’s why a book like “Coming Back Stronger” by Drew Brees is such a breath of fresh air. I recently received a copy from my friends at Tyndale House Publishers to review and it couldn’t have come at a better time. It gave me hope and perspective that not all athletes are overpaid, overrated and selfish.

“Coming Back STRONGER” is the personal story of Drew Brees, the starting quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. Given that last years Super Bowl was the highest rated television show ever, I would guess that many know who Drew is. However I highly doubt that many realize or know the struggles, challenges and obstacles that he has overcome throughout his life. The book takes us all the way back to his High School years when he was teased for the distinctive birthmark on his face. His parents used to tell him that “this was where an angel had kissed him”. It didn’t stop the other kids from teasing him.

This is an excellent gift for the sports fan in your life. Even if you are not a sports fan, “Coming Back STRONGER” will inspire you to tackle (pun intended) life’s obstacles head on. It’s no coincidence that a man like Drew Brees would lead a team like the Saints out of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Also covered in the book are Drew Brees’s many commitments to charities, including his own foundation. He has helped children with cancer, the City of New Orleans, Purdue University, the military and even local schools. Again, in the age of self-absorbed athletes who really only give for the cameras and when they have to, Drew Brees is the real deal. His resume speaks for itself.

With Christmas just a few days away and possibly the need for last minute shopping, “Coming Back STRONGER” would make a great gift for all that receive it. I am honored to have the chance to review it and cannot recommend it highly enough. Excellent book. When men of integrity and determination exist, we need to support and promote them. I’m happy to do that for Drew Brees.

I give “Coming Back STRONGER” a 5 out of 5.
