Archives For Faith

I am so honored to call this church “Home”. One of the things that inspires me to make that statement is their heart for missions. When you read the word “missions” you probably have visions of another country. While that is also a pulse for Rock City Church, they also make a point to take care of those in need right here in Columbus, Ohio. Through ministries like “Laundry Love” and the “Backpack Block Party“, Rock City reaches out to those in need and lets them know that someone cares for them.

Christmas gives us the wonderful opportunity to do something again.

Below is a link for all that Rock City is doing this Christmas to show the love of Christ to those in need. The letter from our Pastor does a much better job explaining it than I even could. GIVE A ROCK CITY CHRISTMAS

Sermon Notes 11.27.2011

This morning our Pastor wrapped up the “Why Worry” series at Rock City Church. This series, and specifically, this message couldn’t have been more timely for me. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one. With something on the schedule this week that could be considered a possible reason to worry, it was great to get this reminder this morning and put my head and heart where they need to be.

Series: Why Worry?

Title: God cares about my past, present and future.

Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34

  • If there is one thing that can eliminate worry in my life, it’s a realistic view of Who God is.
  • A.W. Tozer said that what comes to mind when I think about God is the most important thing to me.
  • If God is Who He says He is, then what He does and says suddenly matters, a lot.
  • My answer to the question, “Who do you say that I am?” will determine the direction of my life.
  • Being a Christian is more than merely believing in God; it’s about movement and constant alignment.
  • When I move closer to God, He moves closer to me.
  • My past prepares me. My present positions me. My future empowers me.
  • God accepts me as I am, but He loves me too much to let me stay this way.
We begin a new series next week called “Home for the Holidays”. Can’t wait to prepare for the Christmas season with a weekly reflection leading into Christmas.

This week was the final sermon in the “Why Worry” series at Rock City Church. It’s been a powerful series which has challenged me, a chronic worrier, to really think about why I worry and what I can do about it. Below are the notes from this morning.

Series: Why Worry?

Title: God Cares About My Money

Scripture: Matthew 6:19-21, 24-25

  • Our affluence is one of the leading causes of worry in our lives.
  • From start to finish, Scripture emphasizes God’s ownership of everything.
  • God makes everything that is His available to us – not to own, but to use.
  • The key to being a good steward is acting in the owners best interest.
  • Stewardship is not a narrow subcategory of the Christian life; it is the Christian life.
  • When we come to Christ, God puts all of His resources at our disposal, and He also expects us to put all of our resources at His disposal.
  • Jesus emphatically illustrates through much of His teaching that our wealth puts us at an extreme spiritual disadvantage.
  • Tithing and generosity forces us to have faith and reminds us that we are putting God first in our lives.
  • God gives to us so that He can give through us.
  • It is only when we can quiet the worry in us and seek God and His kingdom above all else, over the empty, shallow things of this life, that we can truly experience true and everlasting life.

Remarkable Sunday at Rock City and another week of “firsts”. This morning Rock City Church had their first Baby Dedication Sunday. Such a special moment for all involved. The worship team BROUGHT IT on three songs, including “You Hold Me Now” by Hillsong. Quite possibly one of my favorite worship songs right now. Awesome.

Series: Why Worry?

Title: More Than Forgiven

Scripture: Matthew 6:25-34

  • I am more than forgiven; I am made righteous through Christ.
  • Holiness is my pursuit; Righteousness is my position.
  • Being made righteous means that I am placed in right-standing with God and adopted into the family of God.
  • There is blessing associated with being a part of God’s family.
  • Everything that Christ lost on the cross, He gave up willingly for our gain.
  • The key to living a worry-free life is understanding my position in God’s family.
  • Because He lacks nothing, I lack nothing.
  • I am blessed for the divine purposed of multiplying God’s image throughout the earth.
  • I am blessed in order to be made a blessing to others.

My scribbles:

  • Holiness is how I live.
  • My pursuit is righteousness.
  • God isn’t concerned with my happiness. He’s more concerned that I understand I am blessed so that I may be a blessing.
