What Makes A Great Song?

February 8, 2011 — 2 Comments

Last night at dinner, my wife asked a GREAT question. Before I get to her question, let me give you some background information. My wife listens to music “recreationally”. In other words, if it is on she will listen to it, but she doesn’t need music to be on to complete whatever task she is working on (driving, running, working around the house). I on the other hand need music to be on at all times. Music is like a soundtrack for my life. I can give you specific things I was doing when I hear a song, or tell you what song was on during specific moments in my life (it’s a sickness really). Now her question:

What makes a great song? Is it the lyrics or the beat?

What do you think? I gave her my answer using an analogy. Here’s what I said…

Songs are kind of like dating, the beat catches your eye (ear) the lyrics make you continue to build a relationship with the song (date). I can’t count how many times I have heard a song and then one day really LISTENED to the song. I listen to a song when I put meaning behind the lyrics. I connect with the song and not just the beat or melody. I had a boss that once called music “chewing gum for the ears”. He didn’t listen to music, he heard it.

So how about it…What makes a great song?

Tonight’s the big night…It’s time to announce the winner in my “Crazy Love” giveaway for the new Hawk Nelson CD…appropriately called…”Crazy Love”. This was, by far, the highest traffic giveaway I have ever done. That is 99.9% (the rest might have been human error and had nothing to do with me) because of Hawk Nelson and their incredible following. This CD is only going to grow that fan base and make those that are already fans of this band that much stronger. It is one of their best. I’ve been listening to it for about a week now and can’t say it enough. Great, great CD.

A couple of quick thank you’s before we get to the video. First off, thanks to the guys at Hawk Nelson for the CD and for allowing me to do this. Second, a BIG thank you to my friend Lori at Overture-Media for working with me to make it all happen. Next, a big thank you to all of you that commented and shared with all of us who you “Crazy Love”. I thoroughly enjoyed reading each comment this week. Good to know that love still exists and means something!! Lastly, thanks to my three awesome kids for helping with the high quality production that was the drawing. I mean this was real, real high tech stuff.

Light Up The Sky

February 4, 2011 — Leave a comment

On Thursday, February 10th, “The Boy” and I will be lighting up the sky in Dayton, Ohio. Since they announced the tour dates for the Rock and Worship Roadshow, we have eagerly anticipated this date! Obviously the driver for us was to once again rock out to our favorite band, Thousand Foot Krutch, but we’re pretty pumped to also see MercyMe, Jars of Clay and the band in the video below, The Afters. We even ordered the shirts to allow us to jump the line so we can be one of the first to get in. Hopefully we’ll be front and center (“the boy” will have ear plugs) to rock and worship! Check out this video from The Afters for “Light Up The Sky”. Great concept video:

Tis the season of love (Valentines Day that is) and I’m giving away some CRAZY LOVE!! More specifically I am giving away the wicked great new CD by the guys from Hawk Nelson. If you are a Hawk Nelson fan you will crazy love this CD. If you’re not a fan of Hawk Nelson or have not heard them than you really should be! Thanks to my friend Lori at Overture Media, I have become a pretty big fan of this band. This CD does not disappoint. Driven by the book “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan, Hawk Nelson set out to create lyrics that remind us of the love that the God of this universe has for each one of us. I’ll do a review soon, but trust me when I say this CD is great.

So…who wants a copy? I‘m giving ONE COPY of “Crazy Love” away through this blog. Here’s how it’s going to work..

In the comments section, tell me at least one person that you “Crazy Love” and why. Don’t be shy. I will even give you the gift of going second by saying that I “Crazy Love” my beautiful bride and 3 children. That’s no secret, but they make me the man I am today. They challenge me, shape me and keep me accountable. I am blessed by every moment in their presence.

Simple…right? Leave your comment below. On Friday night, I will take each name that left a comment and put them into the lucky Carolina Tar Heel hat. I’ll have my kids draw the winner on video and we will post it here on the blog. Leave a comment, check back Friday night/Saturday morning-ish and we’ll have our winner.

Less Than Perfect

January 26, 2011 — 3 Comments

This is sure to get hate mail…but here goes…

Do you pray for celebrities?

It’s no secret that I am a fan of P!nk (the singer not the color). Before you think it’s some weird obsession thing, I’m not that kind of fan of hers. As an artist, as a lyricist, I appreciate her. She is raw, obscene, dark and often off-color. One thing is for sure…she’s honest. In a time and an age when we all talk about being afraid to be “who we are”, we often criticize those that are. To quote P!nk herself:

Done looking for the critics, cuz they’re everywhere
They don’t like my jeans, they don’t get my hair
Stringe ourselves and we do it all the time
Why do we do that?
Why do I do that?
Why do I do that?

Which leads me to the very song with which those lyrics come. The title, like the song, includes an obscene word (repeated in every chorus). The video isn’t exactly rated G either. However she has released a clean version of the song in which she replaces the obscene word with the words “Less Than”. I was glad to hear that because if we like it or not, P!nk has something which is very important….influence.

Think she doesn’t? Check iTunes and you’ll find that song sitting at number one.

Is it sad that she used profanity in the song, yes, very. Have some people downloaded it just because that very profanity, yes, probably. But here is why I bet a vast majority have clicked to download it…

Several years ago I saw a behind the music about P!nk on TV. It was after that show that I began to follow her career. The show explained why she is who she is, does what she does and says what she says. P!nk is less than perfect. Her childhood was less than perfect. Her family was less than perfect. Her marriage has been less than perfect. Her lyrics speak to the teens that follow her because they feel less than perfect too.

Can’t the same be said of each one of us?

I once heard Dr. Bill Brown, President of Cedarville University, talk about praying for celebrities. His list included the likes of Eminem and Marilyn Manson. Just recently I heard him speak again and he referenced his prayer list (which now includes Brad Pitt). It struck a chord in me. If we aren’t praying for them, who is?

That is why I pray for P!nk. Those prayers have grown more now that she is expecting a child. Becoming a parent has a way of changing us in ways we never anticipate. I’m one guy that can preach an entire sermon series on that with plenty of analogies from my own life. It is my prayer that P!nk finally faces the things that have shaped her and give them to Jesus. I pray that her child, like my 3 kids, teaches her the unconditional love of a Heavenly Father. Lastly I pray that God can take her “Less than perfect” and make it beautiful. He’s done it in my life time and time again.
