World Cup Madness

June 7, 2010 — 2 Comments

I don’t watch soccer. I don’t play soccer. My kids don’t play soccer. We don’t own a soccer ball and I didn’t celebrate when The Columbus Crew won the Championship. The closest I have ever been to a Crew game was I drove by the stadium while one was going on once. I don’t know the players and I don’t follow the teams. It doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with soccer. I just don’t follow it. I have several friends that do all of the above. One thing I do understand is their passion and love for a sport. I’ve got the same sickness, it’s just a ball that bounces and goes through a hoop.

This video is a salute to soccer (and sports fans) everywhere. Enjoy the World Cup.

Parting Shots

I tried. I really did. I tried to go all day without doing one more sports post. I just can’t help it. I’ve said it before, I’m a Cavs fan and native Clevelander. So last night’s loss to the Celtics and ultimate Championship Dreams was disappointing. Heartbreaking? No. Disappointing? Yes. For those that don’t enjoy the sports talk, you can scroll down to another post at this point. If you’re up for some good sports rants, feel free to read on.

I'm Coming Home

May 13, 2010 — Leave a comment

While it is a little known fact that I was born in Anchorage Alaska, if you ask me where I call “home”, without hesitation I will tell you Cleveland, Ohio. I actually grew up in a little town called Bedford on the east side of the city, but Cleveland is my city. The city is the punchline in many jokes and is often referred to as “the mistake on the lake”. I like to say that it might be a mistake, but it’s our mistake! I love Cleveland. Some of my greatest memories begin and end in Cleveland. That is why this weekend is so special to me.

On Sunday morning, I will rise at 5:00am in order to be at the starting line to run the Cleveland Half Marathon at 7:00am. This is the final half marathon in the 4 in 4 weekends in 4 cities. More important than the half marathon is the Celebration of Life service for my Mom which will take place later that afternoon. Although Mom passed away on March 5, this is our first opportunity to meet together with friends and family in our hometown. I cannot wait to thank the many people that supported, encouraged, prayed and mourned with us. I look forward to sharing stories of the amazing woman that changed anyone she came in contact with.

Over the course of the 13.1 miles I run on Sunday morning, I plan to reflect and honor my Mom with each step. This race is my way of thanking her for running her race with grace, with passion for the lost and with perseverance through pain. She ran her race and today sits at the feet of her King. Sunday will be a day filled with emotions but I can’t think of a better setting than Cleveland Ohio.

To our friends in Cleveland…..I’m coming home.

Tar Heel Blues

Tip-off of Duke Blue Devils vs. North Carolina...

Much has been made this season about the fall from grace of my beloved Tar Heels. I’m okay with that. One reason is that until Monday night when they crown a new champion, North Carolina is still NCAA Champ. The Tar Heels have also been the punchline of many jokes this season. It’s all a part of being the best. When you fall they will line up to point it out.

Tonight the Tar Heels will play Dayton for the NIT Championship. You know the “Not In Tournament”? The one that wins can lay claim to “We’re number 67″! Like I said on twitter earlier today, it’s feels kind of like when you take a walk in softball. It’s helpful, but just not the way it was meant to be. All that to say that I’m proud of my Heels. They could have mailed it in or worse yet, decline the invite to the NIT (which many recommended they do). They have actually won 7 of 9 and 4 in a row. They have also won all but one of those games on the road in hostile environments. It is all going to help next season when they return to “Elite” status.

WASHINGTON - MAY 11: University of North Caro...

If it means anything at all, this is the first time all week I have even looked at the NCAA brackets for this year. It’s 12:00am on Wednesday as I type this. By now I usually have Carolina written into the sweet 16 (even in off years) and fill in the brackets accordingly. I’ve done it that way for 20 years. Not this year. The dark cloud over the Heels this year caused “the boy” and I to not watch nearly as much college basketball as we normally do. With that in mind, Here’s my picks:

Sweet 16: Kansas, Maryland, Georgetown, Ohio State, Syracuse, Butler, Pitt, Kansas St., Texas, Wisconsin, Marquette, West Virginia, Louisville, Texas A&M, Baylor and Villanova.

Elite 8: Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, Pitt, Texas, West Virginia, Louisville and Villanova

Final 4: Kansas, Syracuse, Texas and Villanova

Championship: Kansas and Villanova

Champion: Kansas

My only gripe with the selection committee is that they blew my  pre-season prediction that either Kentucky or Texas would win it this year by putting them in a potential matchup in the 2nd round. Then again, Texas’s fall from #1 to an 8 seed didn’t help either. I said before the season started that Kentucky would win it all. I still think they could (then be on probation in 2 years but that’s another post). However I am taking Texas because they are LOADED. If they can figure out what caused their slide the last 6 weeks, they can easily run the table to the Final Four. 6 wins brings home a Championship.

Ohio State’s bracket scares me a bit. There are great teams through out that region. It could be anyone’s game. In true Tar Heel fashion, I had to choose Duke getting upset. I like Louisville’s chances in the 2nd round. Matter of fact, nothing would make me happier. Don’t go to sleep on West Virginia either. They could run the table too. A West Virgina and Kentucky Elite 8 game would be some “must see TV”.

So there you have it. That and 50 cents will get you a whole lot of nothing. What a difference a year makes….
