Don't Know Where To Begin

October 31, 2010 — 2 Comments

On Friday night, my wife, “the boy” and I took the much anticipated journey to Dayton, Ohio for the Make A Difference Tour. Since first hearing about this tour way back in April, it has been on my radar as a “can’t miss event”. I am amazed at Gods provision when I look back and see all of the things that came together on this one magical evening. Like the title says, I don’t know where to begin.

So many highlights

So little space to tell the “whole story”

I’ll do my best to recap briefly, but you’ll need to understand there was so much more to each of these moments. It was electric and it was unforgettable.

1. Obviously this entire event was created to support Max Lucado’s passion to see children sponsored through World Vision. Thanks to this opportunity, we are now sponsoring our third child. I cannot wait until we step into Heaven one day and meet each one face-to-face.

2. When we arrived at our seats (thanks to my incredible friend Dave Schroeder), we found that Michael Hyatt and his lovely bride Gail Hyatt were in the seats next to ours. This was such a blessing to both Heather and I. We have communicated briefly through the internet but to meet two people we have the upmost respect for in person was just wonderful. Had the concert been cancelled at that point, we would have already walked away blessed beyond measure. It was such an honor and privilege.

3. When Intermission arrived, The Hyatts and the three of us made our way backstage. Thanks again to David Schroeder, we had to opportunity to spend a few minutes with one of my heroes, Max Lucado. This was our second time meeting Max and remarkably, he remembered the first (including the location). He remembered “the boy” and even said “You’re bigger than you were last time we met”. If  you’ve ever read Max’s books, know this…he is every bit in person the man he is behind the pen. Incredibly humble, gentle and sincere man after Gods own heart. I walk away each time so refreshed by his person as much as his presence.

4. Obviously “the boys” big draw for this event was none other than TobyMac. We are pretty big fans of Toby in our house and we were dancing in our seats as Toby performed. Little did we know that when we walked backstage, Toby (and Michael W. Smith) would be standing right there. We finally got the opportunity to thank him for making THIS VIDEO for us and share some quick stories. “The Boy” was speechless.

5. To top it all off, we got to meet up with our good friend Heath Mahon (Toby featured Heath in this video last week). Heath is a great man and one of the guys that makes TobyMac happen on the road. We are honored to call him friend. It was wonderful to meet up with him backstage to catch up on the past few months and then talk some Tar Heel basketball! (GO HEELS!!!)

6. Last but not least, when the show (which was awesome) was over and the lights came up, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around to find a friend I have not talked to in years. Like each and every other moment I have listed above, it was a special time. It was great to catch up on the years and see him (and his VERY tall son) again. Words cannot describe….

The funny thing is that each and every moment listed above would have made for a great evening. I just realized I said NOTHING about the concert. Trust me when I say it was great. But given the extra special moments, each one equally incredible, throughout the evening, the concert was almost secondary. The only thing I could tell my wife and “the boy” as we walked out was…

“Stuff like this just doesn’t happen”.

I trust Gods provision and plan. I’ve learned that there are things that happen that are so wonderful and so obvious that his fingerprints are everywhere. You can’t miss them. So often we spend our time searching, hoping, praying for evidence of His plan. When evenings like Friday happen, I can’t help but notice how obvious they can be. It is when that happens that..

I simply don’t know where to begin.

Reindeer Run Wrap Up

December 14, 2008 — Leave a comment

I had fun running the Reindeer Run yesterday over at Easton. The temperature was cold, but once we got going it really didn’t cross my mind. One thing I am going to do for every race from now on is start with the song “I Am Free” by the Newsboys. It is the perfect pace setter but more importantly, the line “I am free to run” is such a great reminder of our freedom in Christ. During my pre-race stretching I listened to the Hillsong CD “This is our God”. It was great to just spend some time in quiet praying for many things and people. In many ways, it was a time of worship. It was “beautiful chaos“.

Heather and the kids braved the cold too. When I turned the corner on the home stretch to see them waiting at the finish line, I can’t explain the feeling. It was all I needed to pick up the pace for the final stretch and finish strong. Next up is the First on the First run January 1st. Here’s the final numbers:

Temperature: 17 Degrees!

Distance: 3.1 Miles

Time: 28:32

Pace: 9’16”

Never Forget

September 11, 2008 — 4 Comments

I’m still doing the “road warrior” thing today with a quick trip over to Indianapolis. I had to share one quick story from my trip to Denver. I was walking through the airport in Columbus I saw a family (older Mom and Dad, young wife, husband and baby) taking pictures together. As I approached, they asked if I could take a picture for them. The mom proudly said “He’s going back to Iraq today….2nd tour of duty”.

Talk about a reality check. Here was this young man, with a wife and child and he was leaving for the second time. When they thanked me for taking the picture, I simply said “no, thank YOU for your service to our country.” I think I walked away from that moment with a lot to think about and even more the be thankful for.

For all of those that lost their lives on September 11th and have sacrificed while defending our freedom since. For all of those that continue to fight for our freedom today, we will never forget…..

What a weekend. The family and I left on Friday afternoon to head to our hometown of Bedford, Ohio for the wedding of Heather’s youngest sister. “My Girls”, “The Boy” and Heather were all in the wedding so it was an exciting time for everyone. There is always a part of me that still loves going “home” to where my roots are planted. While the condition of my old hometown is not what I remembered it to be, one thing is for sure…the people never change. You really can go home.

One take away from this weekend is that no matter how many miles, years or changes separate people, when there is a bond that is formed, nothing can ever break that. This weekend I was reminded of how strong and real friendships are as I spent some time with some old friends. I’m amazed how 10 years can seem like 10 minutes when you meet up with old friends. When I spent some time with guys like Gary and Ern, it was as if we were on the old softball fields again.

One other mark of friendships that last forever is that they still answer the bell when you are in a time of need. With Heather’s responsibilities in the wedding, I was flying solo trying to keep 2 little girls dresses clean neat and organized and one little boys tux from permanent damage. Just when I needed help most, there were old friends saying “You need a hand?” and “if there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know”. That’s friendship. That’s community. That’s going home.

And The Winners Are….

June 13, 2008 — 1 Comment

The votes have been tallied and what would voting be in Ohio without a little controversy? Actually, there isn’t any controversy, I just have mixed emotions about the winners in my Toby Mac “Alive and Transported” giveaway contest. Without further delay, I give you our two contest winners….

1. Rindy Walton- Rindy has seen Toby Mac 3 times has three sons that will really like this CD/DVD package. I might be a bit biased, but I also have a heart for people that “step out of the boat” and launch a church plant. Rindy is doing just that at Walls Down Church. She is jumping into the unknown to reach the people of Cincinnati with the message of Jesus Christ. She has a great heart for people and her sons. This CD/DVD will play nicely as she makes the journey to Cincinnati to begin her ministry! Congratulations Rindy!

Now for the controversy. This kills every fiber of my Tar Heel lovin’ being to announce….

2. Jeff Korbini- “JK” and I go WAY back. While it kills me to give “the goods” to a Duke Fan (it hurts to even type it), I couldn’t be more happy to share this CD with the Korbini family. You can read Jeff’s comments on that post (which was by far the most creative), but he is a HUGE Toby Mac fan. He’s also a guy that is real and a brother whose Christian walk I admire. While I question his judgement in sports teams, one thing I don’t question is his integrity and love for his family. I know that Anthony, Marissa and Mauriana will be rocking out to this CD/DVD on a regular basis (*cough* wearing UNC gear *cough*).

So thanks again to my friends at Wiredforsound and EMI CMG for the opportunity to pass along the latest offering from Toby Mac. It doesn’t disappoint. Look for more contests in the future and congratulations again to Rindy and Jeff!
