2007 is officially here. I am happy to report that I kept one of my goals from last year. I set out to read as many of Max Lucado’s books as I could in 06. I will admit that about halfway through the year I decided to add in some other books. If you are interested, you can read my complete 2006 list here. There were some life changing reads in there for sure.
I enjoyed them so much that I have already begun filling the library for 2007. I am pretty excited about my early list. I thought I would get your recommendations to add as well. Here is a quick look at what I plan to read the next few weeks –
- Courageous Leadership – Bill Hybels
- Velvet Elvis – Rob Bell
- Searching for God Knows What – Donald Miller
- Where is God When it Hurts – Philip Yancey
- God Came Near – Max Lucado
- He Chose the Nails – Max Lucado
- Prayer, Does it Make a Difference? – Philip Yancey
- Chasing Daylight – Erwin McManus
The rest of my early list can be found here. If you’ve read any of the above, or would like to recommend something to add to the list, I am open to suggestions. Some of the best books I read in 2006 (“Wild at Heart” and “Blue Like Jazz”) came highly recommended. So….whatcha readin?
I’m currently reading a Max Lucado book; “Cure for the Common Life.”
Brian,
I’ll be interested to see what you think of that one when you are done. I read it last year and was a little disappointed. I think I read it with HUGE expectations. Even a bad Max Lucado book is still excellent. I just thought he has had better.
I’m reading Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus….can’t seem to put it down. It also seems to be finding its way into my recent sermons.
Chasing Daylight is currently my favorite book. Searching for God Knows What and Velvet Elvis were great reads for me recently as well.
Reading books has become something I really look forward to each year. This year I plan on trickling in a few unconventional books, something other than new takes on christianity, perhaps even some by and about people or things I don’t tend to agree with. I want to broaden my perspectives this year. On tap for me early this year are:
» Christmas Jars by Jason F. Wright
» Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
» Roaring Lambs by Robert Briner
» Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus
» Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama
If you liked “Blue Like Jazz” you will enjoy “Searching for God Knows What” — it is a great read. A couple others you might enjoy:
> “The Insider” by Petersen and Shamy
> “The Great Omission” by Dallas Willard
> “Revolution” by George Barna
Great, great stuff everyone!
Tom – I really enjoyed “The Barbarian Way” by McManus. I have added Soul Cravings to the list as well.
Mudpuppy – So true about broadening perspectives. Agree 100%. That is why I went away from Lucado a bit. I thought I would get more diverse. I was just talking to someone about the Obama book yesterday. He said it was a great read. Good call on that one. I added it!
Jayman – First off, welcome to the site. Second, I am REALLY looking forward to “Searching”. It’s 3rd in line behind “Courageous Leadership” and “Velvet Elvis”. I really like Donald Miller’s writing. Thanks for the other adds.
All – I am about half-way through “Courageous Leadership” by Bill Hybels right now. I am really digging it. I am going to blog about it when I get done. I have some thoughts, but am saving them. He certainly borders the fine line between putting faith in Gods provision and doing things your own way. For the most part, he is rather accurate with what I have experienced.
Thanks again. Here’s to more great reads in 2007!
Happy New Year to you. May it be a year of many blessings.

“Searching” honestly is one of my top 5 books of my life. That book transformed my thinking so much. I can’t even explain how much that book did for me.
And right now I am re-reading “What’s so Amazing About Grace”, and also going through “The Search for Significance” by Robert S. McGee.
I plan to read some more Yancey stuff this next year–he’s supposed to come speak at a chapel in 2007 (My school is the horribly legalistic one he talked about in “What…Grace?” — they apparently have resolved all their differences with each other and he comes back often…
Looks like you’ve got some great readings–ever read “The Ragamuffin Gospel”? There’s a classic…
I love seeing what others are reading! I read the Narnia series with my son a few years ago, but never any more of CS Lewis—I love his writing! I finished “The Screwtape Letters” and am now reading “Mere Christianity”–love the way he makes you think, bring it to everyday, and has awesome analogies!
