race.jpgTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

As if I needed another reason why my wife is my hero. Several months ago, God laid on her heart the goal of running a marathon. When she initially shared her dream, I need to be honest and say that I didn’t think it was the best idea. Knowing our schedules and how busy our evenings tend to be, I just didn’t see how she could ever find the time to train and prepare for the race. I was seeing this vision through my own human eyes.

One thing we have learned and committed to do, is trust when we feel God leading us. We have (slowly) learned to not worry about the consequences when decisions don’t make sense, or are considered unpopular. It may sound simple, but we have trusted God to work out the “details”. If it is His calling we are hearing, he has already done the planning anyway. Our disobedience to his plan or call, maybe getting in the way of something much greater, bigger and more important then we are ever aware of.

She has endured schedules, conflicts, hip pain, blisters and M.R.I’s to stay focused on her goal. God has spoken to her in her training and she stayed obedient. Those that know her (especially her sisterhood of friends) also know that she never backed down or gave up her commitments, she simply worked around them. She “persevered”. As evidence, on Saturday she ran a tune-up half marathon and then hosted a birthday party for our 2 year old. Amazing. No complaints or requests for the day off. She earned it, but didn’t even ask or consider it.

Lastly, I wanted to thank her community of friends. They endured the weather Saturday morning to cheer her on and meet her at the finish line. They made signs (see picture) and a banner for her to see as she ran. It was a living example of what we all need as we run our race in this life. We need obedience, community and to trust God when he calls us to do something.
