“All the promises we break from the cradle to the grave. When all I want is you.” -U2
I have been hearing and reading more and more about some radical churches taking part in something called U2charist. While I have never quite understood the connection between the group U2 and praise and worship, I say whatever gets people into a church where they can hear the gospel…great. I began to wonder exactly which songs from U2 would be featured in such a service? The one I can connect with the most would be the song “All I want is you” (all 6 minutes of it).
As I listened to that song again, I was reminded of how often I can bring my list of desires and wants to my prayer time. “Ok Lord, please heal this, do that, bring this, remove that..”. I can often bring a list of promises as well. “Lord, if you would just do that, my response will be this.” Sadly, I will admit that even if and when those things happen, my promises are often broken and my list of requests only grows. All he wants is me.
He doesn’t want my empty promises. He doesn’t want my list of outlandish requests. Ultimately, he knows it all anyway. All he wants is me. He wants my time, my life and my all. He can do more with what little I have to give then I could ever do on my own. Isn’t that all I should want too?

First U2 song that came to mind was “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. It has the verse:
But then says:
So, is it a song of belief? Is it a song of doubt? Is it a song of a searching heart?

Hey I got your comment…thank you for reading my post. Check back to see what I responded with…
Grits and Grace…Although I love that song. I think it a song of doubt. But music is art and is left up to interpretation. I feel he’s saying…I’ve done your work and carried your cross but am not filled and can’t find peace.
I think we all feel that way sometimes, but that’s where faith comes in and I don’t see faith listed here in this song. There’s a HUGE difference in believing in God and having FAITH in God.
I believe there’s a devil, but I don’t have faith in him or worship him. I believe a lot of people think that there’s a god, but they don’t worship of have faith in Christ or God.
Im rambling…..sorry!
Yeah…I agree. That’s why, like Aaron, I have trouble linking U2 with praise and worship. Great music, no doubt. Obviously, I don’t know their hearts, but their lyrics leave me hangin’…

We played Still Haven’t Found during our Easter service. (Wish the technogremlins didn’t eat our podcast so I could share it). But basically the pastor’s comments were we will never completely find what we’re looking for until we meet the Man face to face.
We will always be searching and growing while we’re here. This isn’t our home.
“All he wants is me. He wants my time, my life and my all. He can do more with what little I have to give then I could ever do on my own. Isn’t that all I should want too?”
Yes Aaron, it is what we all should want!
Sometimes we try so hard in vain. I think when we yield to Him, realizing we can do nothing without Him, He gives us the grace we need. He wants us to love and worship Him, abandoning our lives to Him. Then He will faithfully meets our needs for He so wonderfully loves and cares for us!
Blessings to you always!
Susan
A,
Sounds like people aren’t digging U2… so let me shock the crowd. My eschatology prof at DTS used U2 almost daily in lectures as we worked our way through Revelations and the other apocalyptic literature. I watched Rattle and Hum countlessly throughout the semester and “Still Haven’t Found What I Looking For” and “Streets with No Name” were profoundly worshipful as I considered them in light of the promise of the glorious appearing of our Great God and Savior. I’d use U2 to introduce a sermon on the eschaton just like I’d use Daughtry’s “Home” to introduce the prodigal’s son. Not really a comment… more of a statement (sorry).
Our home church (fellowshipchurch.com) is a great example where “whatever gets people into a church” is at its core. It’s a wonderful worship experience and songs from U2 are common. So many un-churched people visit because it’s inviting to them. They stay because the messages are relevant and the worship experience is awesome. We love it and invite anyone in the area to visit it.
