A few weeks ago the family and I were on a road trip. The 80’s station on Sirius radio was the music of the moment and prompted the following discussion:
Me: “with a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue” what do you think he meant by that?
(Through the radio comes the exact lyric I just quoted)
Heather: “You’re a freak”.
You see I have this sickness. Some people can memorize scripture. Others know history. I have this crazy ability to remember lyrics. Particularly from the 80’s. I can’t tell you what a congruent triangle is (I even had to look up the spelling), but I can sure tell you the next line that Spandau Ballet is going to sing. Fast forward to this past weekend and Heather, for reasons I cannot remember, brings up that lyric. I proceeded to put on an acappella performance of “True” by Spandau Ballet for the entire family.
The kids think know I am crazy now and we’re not allowed to ever go back to that McDonalds again. For all of you that are children of the 80’s too. I give you…”True”

I can’t hear this anymore without thinking about The Wedding Singer.
I’m always reminded to the P.M. Dawn song “Set A Drift on Memory Bliss” but that is my 90’s showin’ :).
Hey, speaking of the 80’s, thought I’d let you know I got my “Say Anything” DVD in the mail a few weeks ago from you. When I opened it Heather said “is that ours”? She didn’t even know we owned it. Needless to say, it wasn’t missed :).
Lloyd Dobler rules! Good to hear from you. How’s the Sabbatical going?
It’s pretty refreshing not feeling the crunch to post. I feel like a lurker though. I need to get out and comment more often.
Hope I can get my blog act together before the end of August. So much to do!
BTW, we need to hook up before you sell that house!
I have the same “crazy disease”!! I used to study in college by putting info to song. It was the only way I could remember things. I love driving with “oldies” stations—anything from 50’s to 80’s and just singing and singing—yup, my guys think I’m crazy too!! 😉
Mudpuppy – Book it! My team in Detroit keeps planning a forum event at a Tigers game but postponing it. When they do I’ll sneak you in even if we’re in Charlotte by then. Is there a Chipolte somewhere near Toledo? I think it’s calling our name.
Rindy – Good to know I’m not alone. My former boss once said “we’ve all got a little crazy in us. Some just show it more than others”. So true.
I also failed to mention that the other day I was singing some song I heard while we were shopping and Austin said “do you know EVERY song”? I’ve caught him singing too so He doesn’t know it yet….but I think he’s got it too.
Just another thing I have passed on to the next generations Mini Me….
IMO we memorize what’s important to us.
Mike – in keeping with the theme….”I know this much is true”. Very good point. That pretty well tells you where my head was in the 80s. I can hammer 80’s trivia (music, television and movies) but get me into the 90’s and I struggle a bit. The 00’s I am pretty well no use at all.
I’ve been trying to memorize scripture more in the 2000’s (is that a word?). Good call on what’s important to us…..
Why do I find it hard to write the next line……
Oh, I want the truth to be said….
Ha HA HA HAAAA HA HA Ha HA
Right there with you, boy (george). Got em etched in my brain too. Huey Lewis, Brian Adams… they’re all in there locked away.
JK – I bought a ticket to the world, but now I’ve come back again.
Set those lyrics free! Don’t keep them locked up. I have found that useless knowledge, while useless, is better than no knowledge at all….
“Free your mind and the rest will follow” – En Vogue
Oops…I think En Vogue was in the 90’s.
