Every baseball game that “the boy” has, I spend a majority of the time offering tips and tricks and nursing him through inning by inning. Before most at bats either I will visit the dugout or he will visit the place I am sitting. When he is pitching, I offer encouragement, sometimes one pitch after another. So a few weeks ago when someone gave them mini-candy bars after the game, he took two, walked over to us…and promptly gave one to his Mom.
There are days when a boy just needs him Mom. Period.
I woke up this morning to one of those days. I won’t go into details but I’m going to take the liberty to think most everyone reading this knows the kind of day when you just need your Mom. You need to hear her voice and the words that tell you “it’s gonna be alright”. Dad can tell you. Your wife can tell you. Your kids and friends can all tell you but it never sounds better or more true than when it comes from Mom.
For those new to the blog, my Mom passed away in March. I rejoice in her place in Heaven but gotta be honest and say that there are days when a boy needs his mom. There are moments when a phone call of encouragement and understanding could change the outlook of a day. Today is one of those days.
Mom’s, don’t ever underestimate the power of your words of encouragement. Pour them into your kids early and often. If any of you are reading this and haven’t called home lately, take the time to do so today. If you’re reading this and, like me, your Mom is in the presence of Jesus, rejoice and thank the Lord for the blessing that was your Mom too.
Great blog, as usual!
M is for the million things she gave me
O is that she’s only growing old
T is for the tender love she gave me
H is for her heart as pure as gold
E is for her eyes with love-light shining
R is means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me…
We used to sing that song in Sunday School on every Mother’s Day. Not sure why or how I still remember those lyrics…
I thank God for my mom, and even though she’s all the way in South Africa I get to talk to her on the phone weekly. No matter how busy or frustrating her day, she always has a kind word and she’s never selfish with dishing out advice (whether I ask for it or not lol)
Mom’s are special people, with hearts full of love – a true demonstration of Christ’s love in action.
I will always cherish my mom’s love, dedication and commitment to my wellbeing – physically and spiritually. And as she gets older, the only way I can honor her and show my appreciation for all she’s done is by being the best person I can be – sorta like her, but without the kids and husband lol
Be blessed Aaron. Your mom is looking down on you with so much pride because of the man of integrity that you are!
Same holds true for this girl and her mama.
Belinda and Rachel – While I didn’t know either of your mothers, I know enough about you both to say that you’re mirrors reflecting their beauty and their investment in your lives. So much of our lives are “caught and not taught” but a mothers love is the foundation for who we are and become too. You both bless me and this world with who you are.
@Aaron – Thank you for sharing this. Very vulnerable. Very manly. My mom, though still living, moved to Germany last August and will be there for the next few years and I still feel the same way (on a lesser scale) every now and then.
@Belinda – Your acrostic song is good, but I prefer Jerry Jeff Walker’s version:
M is for the mudflaps you give me for my pickup truck
O is for the Oil I put on my hair
T is for T-bird
H is for Haggard
E is for eggs, and
R is for REDNECK
OK… not really. I kid. I joke. Being an Oklahoma boy, I just couldn’t resist an opportunity to quote one of my favorite songs.
