Last night, I was channel surfing and got stopped on a movie from about 10 years ago called “Phenomenon” with John Travolta. As soon as I stopped on it, I said “he bought her chairs”. It’s really the only thing I remember about the movie. Well, that, and the ending (I won’t spoil it in case you’re going to rush right out and and rent it). I had forgotten what a good movie it is. Anyway, back to the point of this post.
In the movie, John Travolta plays a super nice guy (George) that is trying to win the affection of a new lady in town. She also happens to make the most uncomfortable, ugly, handmade wicker chairs. He tells her that she can sell them at his store and sure enough, they start selling like crazy. She continues to drop them off and, unbeknown-st to her, he is the one that continues to buy them! Eventually he wins her love.
Later in the movie, some of the locals are talking about John Travoltas character at the local bar and his friend “Doc” (Robert Duvall) puts a stop to it. He addresses one man in particular that is having trouble with his girlfriend. Their exchange is one of the better quotes from a movie. It certainly left it’s impression on me…I remembered it for the past 10 years!
Doc: How’s Lisa?
Baines: I don’t know.
Doc: You know why Lace cares so much about George?
Baines: No
Doc: He bought her chairs.
Baines: (puzzled look)
Doc: Every women has her chairs, something she needs to put herself into, Baines.
I hope I always remember to figure out my wife’s “chairs” and most importantly….buy ’em.
I really liked Phenemonon. Was a great movie.
I remember Travolta did a lot of pointing. I don’t remember why, though.

How beautiful! I have never seen the movie (which if you knew me, you would know I never see any movies, so it wouldn’t surprise you).
I loved the last line…
I hope you’ve still continued to find your wife’s chair and have always bought them for her.
A woman can only ask for this and her true partner will deliver.
This post gave me hope that there are men that care enough to love their partner respectfully and fully.
Thank you.
For the life of me I couldn’t remember what movie I had heard this line from but I thought it was a Robert De Niro film so this quick search turned into a hunt. Robert Duvall is always confused with Bobby don’t know why? The guys looks around the bar and says something to the effect that the Doctor’s crazy. I agree Phenomenon was an excellent movie! This is a great life skill and if you ever love a women you need to pay attention to these couple of lines cause it’s important. Also the line > Will you love me for the rest of my life?……No….. I am going to love you for the rest of mine! When you see an actor do such a tribute to life on this planet. I will no matter what always appreciate them for how they could bring out such emotion. John Travolta no matter what the tabloids say whether it’s true or not will always have a friend in me. As well as Nickolas Cage in Family Man.
