Today marks the 81st Birthday of the father of Carolina basketball. Although his health is in decline, he is the face of all those that cheer for Carolina blue. Although he has been passed by other coaches for career victories, his concepts and disciplines continue to be used throughout college basketball. He will always be THE coach for UNC basketball.
On a personal level, it may sound funny but I consider Dean to be my coach. I didn’t pick up a basketball until I was a junior in high school. I watched TV and taught myself the game. I learned how to play while watching the coaching of Mr. Dean Smith. I learned by watching a team oriented offense, acknowledging the passer and of course….the four corners. Again it might sound silly, but Dean Smith holds a special place in my heart. Although UNC basketball has continued on, it will never be the same as when Coach Smith walked the sidelines.
