We have officially begun testing the Meal-Kit preparation journey. I hope to answer questions I had and those I have received. Here’s my one week review of Hello Fresh.
I have long thought about testing out the meal-kit preparation thing. Now that two of our three children are back at college and it’s just 3 of us at home, this seemed like as good a time as any. I saw Hello Fresh when a friend posted about it on Facebook. After spending some time watching various youtube videos and online reviews, I pulled the trigger on our first order.
Hello Fresh has a variety of options. I think the most intimidating thing for an over-thinker like me was how many portions and how many meals. You have multiple options here. For portions, you can choose between 2 or 4. For meals, you can receive anywhere between 2 or 6 meals.
We have a family of 3 currently. Would 2 portions be enough or is 4 too many?
We are constantly on the go. How many nights would we actually be able to make the meals?
How long does each meal take with the preparation necessary?
For our first box, I ordered 2 portions for for 5 meals. My thought was that it would be less leftovers and we could have some flexibility for the 7 days between. The package arrived and I was immediately impressed. Hello Fresh have thought of everything. The packaging has all of the instructions you need and the items that arrived were kept cold.
I will warn that my “beauty shots” are nothing to write home about. They actually look like the bad versions of “nailed it.” That said, I did want to give some idea of how the meals turned out. I am by no means a gourmet chef and yet the taste is amazing.
Everything you need is in each individually wrapped brown bag. The meats come individually and separated so you can put them in the freezer or refrigerator. The ingredients have been already measured (for the most part) and it can be as easy as open and add. There is some prep for dicing things like garlic, scallions, potatoes, lemon and lime. Nothing difficult but it does take a little prep time.
Each menu card has the estimated prep time and calories per serving right on the bottom of the card. The only things you might need from home are butter, oil, salt and pepper. Things you likely already have around the house.
Speaking of around the house, I think that is what I like most about these meals. Individually I would not often purchase many of these items and have them in the kitchen. The amount of waste is eliminated by having perfect portion sizes and measurements. The one thing we all agreed on is that there is so much more taste to our meals. Again, likely because I usually wasn’t adding these specific ingredients. Each bite really explodes with flavor.
In terms of portion sizes. We have been able to make it work for 2 1/2 people. In other words, there is plenty of food for two people and a even a little extra for a smaller meal. Before Hello Fresh, our refrigerator was always full of leftovers. I was constantly trying to get creative to use up anything leftover. We have not had to worry about that at all with Hello Fresh and that is a great thing!
We are still trying to determine just how many meals we will receive each week. Like most families, our schedules don’t always align. We try to eat together but sometimes that just isn’t possible. We get our new boxes on Fridays so it gives us a chance to make one or two over the weekend and still have three left for the week ahead. That seems to be our best bet for now but I like that you can easily change that as needed.
Lastly, the menu selection is really easy. There are multiple options. We do not eat fish in our home so I need to make sure that there isn’t any in the meals that I choose. The selection is wide and the meals really are restaurant quality.
I cannot say enough great things about it. It has changed the way that we will meal prep and plan. If you want to TRY HELLO FRESH, you can get $150 off using THIS LINK.
I highly recommend trying it to see if works for your family too.
