Boots.

Home projects. If you do them, God bless you. I don’t have the knowledge, patience, or tools. My wonderful father-in-law quite often reminds me “You can do this if you just had the right tools.”

I appreciate that. I really do.

The truth is I can’t. I am man enough to admit I can’t. I can never fill my dad’s boots. I can’t fill my father-in-laws either.

My dad is a man who loved his bride well. Even when it got tough, he loved her well. It was the greatest gift he taught me. He modeled it. He loved her well.

“I hope he’s proud of who I am
I’m trying to fill the boots of my old man”

-Zac Brown Band

A project in your home will quickly remind you that you are not your “old man” and humble you. I am thankful I could call my dad when I got myself in a plumbing mix. I called in that lifeline. We also called in my bride’s dad for another question. We have that blessing. We are blessed.

If you can’t make that call today, know my heart is with you. I’m sorry. If you still can, make that call while you can.

In the midst of those projects, I heard that song by ZBB. I can’t lie, I broke down a little bit.

I don’t want my kids to fill the boots of their own man. I want them to fill their own!

It led me to send a Ted Talk to our family chat…..

“If I have to wear a dress, I’m wearing my boots.”

-Princess 2.0

Wear YOUR boots. It doesn’t mean you don’t honor, cherish and love your parents boots. Honestly, it often leads to a call to them if we still can. It also leads to pain when we can’t.

As a parent of 3, nothing brings me more joy than when they are doing their thing. When they get in a mix like I did in these projects, I guarantee those two phone calls and the opportunity to provide dad wisdom meant as much to them as it did to me.

Wear your boots.

Fill YOUR boots.

Call em if you still can.

Wear your boots.
