The Power of Listening: How Stories Connect Us

It’s been a few months now since I shut down the Unscripted Podcast and social media. I don’t miss either one but there is one thing I do miss……

The stories.

When I was recording the Unscripted Podcast, I did it to provide a stage, platform and microphone for my guests. It was never about me. It was about their stories. We’ve all got one. I would always say when I was interviewed about the podcast – “We’ve all got one and they never go out of style.” They are covid, recession and time proof.

This week we had our annual Christmas party for the school I work for. It was so good to get outside of the building, out from behind our desks and just hear people’s stories. I was assigned to be a “greeter” at the event with another young lady. Over the course of our 4 hour assignment, I got to hear her story and it was incredible. The highlights, the tough parts, the things that shaped her into who she is.

That might have been the first time I thought “I miss Unscripted.”

No, I am not going to begin recording again. My encouragement to you today is spend time with someone. If they are willing, listen to their story. It will change your perspective and build a bridge to another person on this big old rock we’re living on.

You don’t need a podcast to do it.

They don’t need a stage, microphone or platform.

They just need your time.

You have the power to do it.

May we all write stories this holiday season. Both those we create and those we hear.

Merry Christmas.
