On Saturday, I will officiate my first wedding. Two young hearts that are so close to my heart. I get 15 minutes to tell them about their future. I feel the weight of it. If we’re honest, none of us know. We’re so caught up in the moment—the beauty of our brides—that we forget to think about the future. We hope one of our guys doesn’t pass out or do something stupid on our big day. I keep coming back to the same thing.
What do you tell them?
I wake up in the middle of the night wondering what I will tell them.
How do you tell them that there will be storms?
How do you tell them that there will be mountain moments too?
How do you tell them to hold each other no matter what?
What do you tell them?
I have prepared what I am going to say but I would love to know what you would tell them. Like most of us, they’ll never remember what I tell them. This is their moment. Their start. Nerves, worries, and concerns about the day will overshadow any words I will say. Maybe my message is for myself and those attending who remember their day too. Now we get to listen. We’ve been through the moments beyond THE moment.
I won’t share what I am going to tell them Saturday here. That’s for the three of us and whoever attends.
I just know when it’s all over, I will hug them both. I’ll thank them for the honor of officiating their day. What I whisper in their ear as the DJ plays dance songs, family and friends dance and celebrate, is between them and me.
I know what I will tell them.
What would you?
