What I’ve Learned in Coaching

By now it’s probably no secret what a few of my passions in this life are. I love sports, the Tar Heels and more important than any of those things, I love my son. I love that he loves sports, the Tar Heels and spending time with one another. As he has grown, we have done our best to allow him to try the sports HE wants to play, not just the one’s that I played or love. He has tried soccer, swimming, basketball, baseball, tennis and has yet to attempt football. I’ve always said that I would be passionate … Continue reading What I’ve Learned in Coaching

In Slices

While our kids were at AWANA last night, my wife and I had a chance to sit down with a couple we think very highly of. They are mentors, friends, dreamers and partners on the Journey. We enjoy their company and each opportunity to dream about ministry, community and how we can connect people to both. Our discussions, at times, can be like an episode of Seinfeld. I don’t mean that they are a “show about nothing”, rather they appear to be “all over the place” but at the end the conversation it all ties together. It would make for … Continue reading In Slices

A Night To Remember!

Wow. Alright, let me just get the only bad part of the our Opening Night visit to Conseco Field House for the Pacers game out of the way…Tyler Hansbrough (the reason we got the tickets) did not dress. Well, he was dressed, but it was a suit and dress shoes. His bad shin is “this close” to being ready to play. While that was a bit of a buzz kill, it did not put a damper on a great, great night for “the boy” and I. I couldn’t even make this up, check this out…. 1. He got on the … Continue reading A Night To Remember!

While I Still Got The Time

I’ve been digging the Darius Rucker (former lead singer for Hootie and the Blowfish) CD “Learn To Live” this week. This song was just too close to home. It also includes one of my favorite life instructions (Dance like nobody’s watching). Enjoy. While I Still Got The Time by Darius Rucker Thirty-nine (39) candles burnt out on a cake Each representin’ a million mistakes The last one still burns, there’s a wish I can make This time I’m getting’ it right So I close my eyes and I take a deep breath And I promise myself in the time I … Continue reading While I Still Got The Time

You Wouldn’t Cry

You all know me well enough by now to know that all it takes is a song or a lyric to capture me. Although it would seem odd to many, a few simple words from the speakers can literally change my entire day. Today would be one of those days. While most often the words and music bring joy and great memories, there is an occasional bump in the road. That “bump” came this afternoon out of nowhere and took me by surprise. The song was “Homesick” by MercyMe and memory was of a friend that went “home” in December. … Continue reading You Wouldn’t Cry

Random Randomness

Much going on right now, but not enough worthy of a full blown post. So here are some random thoughts to get us all caught up: Very proud of all 3 of my little ones. Last weekend they competed in the Red Nose Race for kids prior to the Columbus Marathon. Each one competed in a different race based on their age group. They had a great time…no pun intended. Even though Windows 7 was released last week, I have ZERO interest in it. I am now the proud owner of a MacBook Pro and LOVE this thing. The excitement … Continue reading Random Randomness

Birthday Recap

Although “the boy’s” birthday was Tuesday, we officially wrap up the festivities tomorrow. First off, the Hansbrough Pacer’s jersey was a huge hit. He hasn’t worn it yet but I think he’s afraid to mess it up. It will work nicely for our floor seats on Opening night in Indianapolis. Although it could be a total buzz kill if Hansbrough is still nursing his bad shin and doesn’t play! After school on Tuesday the family celebrated his birthday at Red Robin. The celebration was short lived because he was off to play his final game of Fall Ball. Tomorrow is … Continue reading Birthday Recap

Anything Like Me

In just one week, “the boy” will officially turn 9 years old. It is beyond my understanding where the last 9 years went. They always say it goes too fast and “they” are right. This is such an awesome age for all three of our kids. Especially “the boy”. Not only did the apple not fall far from the tree, it generally doesn’t stray too far from there either. If you’ve ever noticed, he is usually right next to me whenever we go somewhere. It both thrills and scares me to death. Hopefully I’m “raising him up in the way … Continue reading Anything Like Me

Tuesday Night Music Club

“The Boy” and I recently rigged up an area in the unfinished portion of our basement so he could practice pitching to a target this winter while we’re stuck indoors. We also wired up an old computer and iTunes 9 (with home sharing) to pump in music while we’re practicing. It’s not quite a “man cave”, but it works. At some point this evening, someone dialed up a little “Hoedown Throwdown” on the jukebox and the dance party was on. Below is a video featuring my girls and our nephew Jackson who joined the party a little later. Make sure … Continue reading Tuesday Night Music Club

I'm Troubled

Friends….I’m troubled. I am troubled by what our country has become and is becoming. Now before you assume I am talking about our current President, read on. While decisions are being made and cynicism reigns, this is not what troubles me the most. While town halls escalate and tea parties dominate, this is not what troubles me the most. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to politics. I can’t claim to understand what all of the shouting and organizing ultimately will do to make a difference. So what troubles me most is that the … Continue reading I'm Troubled

A Class Act

I now have video proof that former Tar Heel Tyler Hansbrough is a class act. After all, he helps find lost dogs! In other news, I have confirmed our FRONT ROW FLOOR SEATS for the Indiana Pacers home opener vs. the Miami Heat on October 30th. So if you are missing any pets, let me know. I’ll pass the information along to Tyler. On a more serious note, it was great to read this article on ESPN today about Titan Quarterback Vince Young taking Steve McNair’s kids to “Dear Dads Breakfast”. That is what it means to fill the gap. A … Continue reading A Class Act

8 Years ago today, I sat like most of the country staring at the images on the television. I remember being at work when we heard the news. I remember the chatter of what could possibly have hit the Trade Center Towers. We turned on a TV in time to see the Pentagon had been hit. It was at that moment that I knew we were in big, big trouble. My thoughts immediately shifted to my wife (who was teaching at that time) and my 1 year old son who was with a babysitter. I wanted to get to them … Continue reading 8 Years Ago

The Truth!

I mentioned in a previous post that there were two things that really stood out to me about the gathering last weekend with Dennis Jernigan. The first was God “singing over us” like a father sings over his children. The second was something he said about our desire for knowledge. I have to be really honest and say that I have been stuck on this internal struggle for some time now. In an age of being able to get information quickly, I think I have become so used to finding the answers when I need them. Yet that is not … Continue reading The Truth!

Imagine

On this crazy date (09/09/09) and with the big release of the new Rock Band Beatles Edition, I couldn’t help but use that title. Reality is that this post has nothing to do with either of those things. Matter of fact, this is one of those “soapbox” posts that has been brewing for a while. I can’t help it. I can only imagine. Imagine a world where the church wasn’t divided Imagine a world where churches weren’t territorial Imagine a world where we were the hands and feet Imagine a world where we stopped fighting each other and started fighting … Continue reading Imagine

Time's Up…

Here it is..the training is over and all that awaits now is the race itself. I am really excited about this one for some reason. Maybe after running one already, I have a small idea what I am in for. Overall, I enter this one on Sunday in a better place mentally and physically than the half marathon we did in May. I am most excited that Heather and 2 other friends are running the race Sunday too. Next time I post, it will be a recap of the race. Pray for us Sunday as we push off around 7:30 … Continue reading Time's Up…

City On Our Knees

Nearly one year ago our world was turned upside down. If you’ve been following along that long, you will remember that if we could hit reverse on the DVR, there would be a “For Sale” sign in our front yard. There were boxes in our living room and plans were being made to relocate to Charlotte, North Carolina. Fast forward the DVR about one month and you find that the entire process went full circle. No boxes were ever packed. No trucks ever loaded. The “For Sale” sign was gone and one song became an anchor for me as to … Continue reading City On Our Knees

I Have Decided

For those that have been following along, I have been looking/deciding on a t-shirt to wear for the Half Marathon on Sunday. As I said in a previous post, I think it’s important to let people know why you’re running. It is also a great opportunity to spread a message to those around you for roughly 2 hours. Thanks to the UPS driver and Max Lucado, I now have the shirt which will spread that message. It’s all about living FEARLESS! Heather and I have both been reading advanced copies of Max Lucado’s incredible new book FEARLESS. I am honored to … Continue reading I Have Decided

And They're Off…

So it begins, another year of school. Last night all three of our children were so excited about the start of a brand new year of education. They must have gotten that gene from my wife because I know I never got all that excited about another year of “hittin’ the books”. The walk to school this morning was funny though. All the little ones with their new backpacks, shoes and outfits for the first day. Moms and Dad’s lined the outside entrance with cameras in hand. One family (complete with Grandma and Grandpa) were literally videotaping their child as … Continue reading And They're Off…
