As Hurricane Katrina roars towards New Orleans, we are surrounded by the reports of the potential destruction. Fox News has dedicated their entire broadcast day to show the images, the storm track, the people, the city and the estimates as to what Katrina will do to this city. By the time some of you read this, we may already know what the results are. I pray that the estimates are wrong, that something changes and the destruction is minimal. Either way, I find myself sitting here tonight hearing that still small voice saying “Be Still and Know that I am God”.

Some may read that and immediately click on another link and move on from this post. How can I say that? How can I just “be still” when I know that the God that created this world, created man, creates nature could allow such tragic events to happen? It is by far one of the toughest questions for people of faith to answer. What makes it worse is that I don’t have the answer. I have ideas, thoughts and theories, but they are just human attempts to explain a God that sees things in a whole different perspective. God is still in control. We have to have faith and believe it.

As I make this entry, I am thinking that it doesn’t take a hurricane to make us question if God is still in control. Each of us can probably think of someone, maybe it’s you that is going through something right this very moment. Where is God? Why does He allow it to happen? How can this happen to (blank), doesn’t He know they can’t handle that right now? What will happen if (blank)? So many questions and I really only have one simple answer. Psalm 46:10 simply states “Be Still and Know that He is God”. Be still and know that He knows! Be still and know that He already knows why, who, where, and every answer to every question that we have. Consider for a moment a time in your life when you asked questions of God. Then take a moment and consider how your life was changed by that very moment, that very event, or the answer that you didn’t know at that time. He knew. He had it under His control. He carried you, He protected you and He will do it again. We are His children and He knows our very days.

I close with the words to a song by Steven Curtis Chapman. As you think and pray for the people that will be directly affected by the “storms of life” tomorrow and the rest of this week. Remember too, even if for just a moment, to be still and know that He is God.

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still, O restless soul of mine
Bow before the Prince of peace
Let the noise and clamor cease
Be still

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that he has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still

Be still and know that he is God
Be still and know he is our Father
Come rest your head upon his breast
Listen to the rhythm of his unfailing heart of love
Beating for His little ones
Calling each of us to come
Be still
