My attention span and I don’t get along. If you have ever tried to carry on a lengthy conversation with me, you know it’s like nailing Jell-O to a wall. Unfortunately, my patience runs in the same crowd as my attention span. They are partners in the “short supply” category. I don’t like to wait. I don’t like surprises. When I want to do something, I want to do it now! If it means I have to wait, or someone has to explain it to me, then my attention span kicks in and I am off to something else……wait….what were we talking about again…..Oh yeah…my attention span.

Then comes the story of Jesus when he asked his disciples to wait for him while he went off to pray. Mark 14:37-38 states “…Couldn’t you stay awake and watch with me even one hour? Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak.”

Amen brother! I couldn’t have said it better myself!! I don’t know about you, but I get so caught up in thinking of where I will be tomorrow, that I open the door for all sorts of things to happen today! Have you ever been so worried about something that was going to happen that you completely missed what actually WAS happening? It’s in these times that we should “Keep alert and pray”. Keep your eyes on what is happening right here, right now. Even if it means going to war with your attention span.

For anyone that would like it, I can offer some advice and tips on how to do battle with your attention span. One word of caution though…make sure the conversation is……well….brief… (ha-ha)……
