What a weekend. This was one of those weekends that fill the spectrum when it comes to emotions. We went from celebrating the victory against that “team up north” to hearing some very tough and confusing news this morning about a brother in Christ. During his sermon, the pastor mentioned the phrase “he loves you just the way you are”. My attention span being what it is, the song by Billy Joel started ringing in my head.

I don’t know Billy Joel, but my guess is that when he wrote this song, he was not referring to what God has to say to each of us. However, as I sang these lyrics in my head, I couldn’t help but almost feel like that is exactly what God would say if He could. As you read the lyrics below, envision for a moment that you are sitting at the feet of God. You have just asked Him the question “Lord, you know everything about me….what do you think of me?” My guess is that His response would go something like this:

Don’t go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don’t imagine you’re too familiar
And I don’t see you anymore

I wouldn’t leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times
I’ll take you just the way you are

I don’t want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are.

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.

I said I love you and that’s forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are.

Wow. How true are the words? Things like “I took the good times, I’ll take the bad times. I’ll take you just the way you are”. Or “I just want someone that I can talk to”. The truth here is that no matter what has happened, what will happen, He loves us just the way we are. He wants us to be challenged, to use our spiritual gifts and to grow in our relationship with Him, but no matter what, He loves us just the way we are. He created us and He knows us.

So to my brother in Christ and to anyone else that might need to hear the words…..He could not love you any better. He loves you just the way you are…
