It’s been awhile since I last saw the movie “Evan Almighty” and I forgot just how delightful it really is. There are tons of great analogies and sermon illustrations throughout the film. The kids and I watched it again tonight and one single dialog really jumped out at me. There is so much wisdom jammed into this brief point made by Morgan Freeman…who plays God in this film.

Let me ask you something. If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience? Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient? If he prayed for courage, does God give him courage, or does he give him opportunities to be courageous? If someone prayed for the family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does he give them opportunities to love each other?

So often we pray for things and have an expectation of how that should look. So often it never ends up how we draw it up. What are you praying for and have you considered that it might be answered, but not how you pictured it?
