Last night, I was channel surfing and got stopped on a movie from about 10 years ago called “Phenomenon” with John Travolta. As soon as I stopped on it, I said “he bought her chairs.” It’s the only thing I remember about the movie. Well, that, and the ending (I won’t spoil it in case you’re going to rush right out and and rent it). I had forgotten what a good movie it is. Anyway, back to the point of this post.

In the movie, John Travolta plays a super nice guy (George) who is trying to win the affection of a new lady in town. She also makes the most uncomfortable, ugly, handmade wicker chairs. He tells her that she can sell them at his store and sure enough, they start selling like crazy. She continues to drop them off and, unbeknownst to her, he is the one that continues to buy them! Eventually, he wins her love.

Later in the movie, some of the locals are talking about John Travolta’s character at the local bar, and his friend “Doc” (Robert Duvall) puts a stop to it. He addresses one man in particular who is having trouble with his girlfriend. Their exchange is one of the better quotes from a movie. It certainly left its impression on me…I remembered it for the past 10 years!

Doc: How’s Lisa?

Baines: I don’t know.

Doc: You know why Lace cares so much about George?

Baines: No

Doc: He bought her chairs.

Baines: (puzzled look)

Doc: Every woman has her chairs, something she needs to put herself into, Baines. You ever figure out what Lisa’s chairs were and buy them?

I hope I always remember to figure out what my wife and daughters’ “chairs” are and most importantly….buy ’em.
