Upset in the BCS Standings!

Tis the season. The regulars and those that know me well know that I have a weakness for two things – Diet Coke and Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches. Over the years I have developed a little ranking system on the very best Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches in Columbus, Ohio. I am here today to announce that there has been an upset! It all started with my man “D-Rich” and I having lunch at a place over on campus called “Wendell’s“. When they delivered our Buffalo Chicken, I knew that the previous number one (Max and Erma’s) was in for big trouble. After … Continue reading Upset in the BCS Standings!

Who Loves Ya Baby?

I’ve heard it said that “my wife wakes up grumpy in the morning…other days, she lets me sleep in..”. I’m not gonna lie, I HATE mornings. I don’t sleep well in the first place, and the older I get, the more I hate them. So when I read this line in the Max Lucado book “In The Eye of The Storm“, I guess it hit pretty close to home. Probably because it’s so relevant in my home. “If people love you at 6:30 in the morning, one thing is sure: They love you. They don’t love your title. They don’t … Continue reading Who Loves Ya Baby?

That’s Gonna Leave a Mark!!

While we were at little league practice (first year coach pitch) last night, I hit my son in the shoulder with a pitch. They were taking batting practice and it’s safe to say that I was struggling with the command of the ever changing strike zone. We made a call to the bullpen not long after. If there was any good news, it was that it was one of the “softer” hardballs (isn’t that an oxymoron?). I had actually taken that one out of play, but somehow it made it back in and happened to be the one that “got … Continue reading That’s Gonna Leave a Mark!!

Vitale's Job is Safe…

Okay, so I can’t just let the defeat of Carolina go without “one shining moment” which happened during the game. As I said in my last post, besides my Treo phone, the only other contact I had with the game was my 6 year old at home. He was watching the game (in between rounds of a Dora game on the computer with his sister). When the lead had evaporated and the game was tied, the following conversation took place over my cell: Me: Hey buddy, what’s going on? What happened? Mini Me: I don’t know Me: Well how much … Continue reading Vitale's Job is Safe…

Honest Dottie…

I just couldn’t resist this. Ever since I scheduled my flight to San Antonio, I can’t get this out of my mind. Once I touch down, I am dying to get to a pay phone and call someone and say “Honest Dottie, I’m in Texas..listen. The Stars at night are big and bright…”. I know I am not the only one that has seen “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”. Or am I the only one willing to admit it? In other news, “the boy” and I had a great “boys night out” on Saturday. I scored a few tickets to the Indiana … Continue reading Honest Dottie…

My Life = Holiday Inn Commercial

They say that “art imitates life”. Well “they” must follow me around. This is the second time I have had a Holiday Inn commercial which has totally depicted my stay at…you guessed it..a Holiday Inn. Here’s the story. I drove over to my second home (Indiana) very early yesterday morning to put in a full days work with the Exec’s at Corporate. It was a good day, but I was looking forward to crashing at the local Courtyard hotel, which is my hotel of choice. When I got there, for the second visit in a row, they said “sorry…no confirmation”. … Continue reading My Life = Holiday Inn Commercial

Off To a Wonderful Start

In the movie “Major League”, Harry Doyle is doing play-by-play for the very first game of the season and says “You can often tell how the season goes by the very first at bat”. Willie Mayes-Hayes promptly hits a dribbler about 2 feet in front of the plate and is tagged out. I sure hope I am not sitting in the middle of one of those moments. As I type this, I am sitting in the airport in Columbus. The fog outside is so thick, I can’t even see that little hallway thing that Jim Carrey fell off of in … Continue reading Off To a Wonderful Start

Are you "Joy Challenged?"

In his book “The Life You’ve Always Wanted“, John Ortberg outlines a plan for the spiritual discipline of joy. He recommended that if you find yourself down, depressed, or often “joy challenged”, you should surround yourself with people that bring you joy. He even went so far as to say that we should schedule regular appointments in our busy lives with someone that brings us laughter and joy. Not bad advice. I saw this clip over on Pastor Hawkins site last week and to be honest, wish I knew “Gladys from Austin”. She would be someone I would want to schedule time … Continue reading Are you "Joy Challenged?"

Confessions

I know the first step to recovery is to admitting it. So I am here today to do just that. Friends and readers I am in love with 3 blondes! Wait, it gets worse. Each and every one of them has blue eyes! To take it one step further….they all live in my home! There, I said it. It’s out there and I can’t take it back. Wow…I feel so much better. In all honesty, this post deals with the middle one. The first of my little girls has taken up residence in a special little place of my heart. … Continue reading Confessions

Now for Something Completely Different

Let’s change it up a bit shall we? Enough heavy stuff for this week. Someone sent me this clip at work and I couldn’t stop laughing. Even though I am a “night owl”, I don’t watch too much Jay Leno. Guess I have been missing out on all the fun with “Ross the Intern”. Although this clip features the late Steve Erwin, I think it actually shows his humorous and very good natured side. Enjoy Continue reading Now for Something Completely Different

When Mama’s Away…

My wife has been away this weekend with a friend that was speaking at a retreat. I’m glad she got the time away. Usually I am the one that jet sets all over the USA. I am not aware of any permanent damage to the kids, our van, or the house (yet). I am a bit unsure if ketchup comes out of clothes, so if you have any tips for washing, I would love to hear them. Below are some other lessons I have learned the past few days. 1. When the bell at school rings at 3:45, it’s a … Continue reading When Mama’s Away…

Crazy…

“No we’re never gonna survive unless we are a little crazy” – Seal A few weeks ago, I was having lunch with my boss and he said the strangest thing. I don’t even remember the context, but his statement went like this; “Aaron, everyone’s got a little crazy in them. Some just show it more than other’s” For the life of me, I don’t know why I still remember that. Maybe it’s the “little bit-o-crazy” that is sneaking out of me. I think he’s right though. I think there are times when we absolutely need to be! I remember the … Continue reading Crazy…

I Did The Heisman!

Boy, that sure didn’t take long. Nothing like getting this new found grace put to the test right away. Here’s how it all went down. I was waiting at the counter of the gas station today when a businessman in a hurry came in. He announced to the teenager behind the counter and I that his battery had just died, right there at the pump. Being that I was a “businessman in a hurry” too, I froze. I stood there, speechless, like a statue. Replace the football with a 12 pack of diet coke and the Heisman Trophy is an … Continue reading I Did The Heisman!

"I Googled It"

The following story is 100% accurate, true and in no way made up. I must also say that it involves my 6 year old son, who just started kindergarten and is just now learning to read. The stage is now officially set. Last night I was working in my office and the older two kids were upstairs playing on the computer. The house is networked, so all printing ends up coming out of my all-in-one in the office. Sure enough, it kicked on and began to spit out a picture. Knowing I did not click print, I was interested to … Continue reading "I Googled It"

Take Life by the Hand….

I thought I would take this opportunity to follow up on a story that I broke last week. As I stated in an earlier post, I found a plaque on vacation that said “Dance Like No One’s Watching”. I didn’t buy it, but decided to get one after returning home. After searching on the internet with no luck, my wife said “Why don’t you just call that store?”. My thought was that I wouldn’t appear to be such a “web master” if I did that (sorta like stopping for directions), but I was getting desperate! I called. They said “we … Continue reading Take Life by the Hand….

Interceding

The story below comes from the book I am reading (The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg), but is actually a true story from well known Pastor Tony Campolo. It is hilarious and yet an example of the way that God can use intercessory prayer in unbelievable ways. A prayer meeting was held for Tony Camplolo just before he spoke at a Pentecostal college chapel service. Eight men took Tony to a back room of the chapel, had him kneel, laid their hands on his head, and began to pray. That’s a good thing, Tony wrote, except that they … Continue reading Interceding

What Will The Neighbors Think?

Talk about finding joy in the ordinary… Ya know, some people find inspiration in a beautiful sunset, walking on the beach, fishing, or seeing nature. I seem to get mine cutting the grass! Much of this has to do with the iPod I have firmly planted in my ears while I perform said task. So maybe it’s more about the music and less about the beautification of our plot o’ land. But I digress…. Earlier this week I heard a song by Darrell Evans simply titled “freedom”. The verses come directly from 2 Corinthians 3:17 which states “..where the Spirit … Continue reading What Will The Neighbors Think?

On Specially Marked Boxes

“There ain’t no Coupe Deville lying at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box”. – Meatloaf This morning I observed my son open a brand new box of cereal. After breaking the seal, he carfully removed the plastic baggy from the box. From there, he could get a clear shot at exactly where the toy was located. Like a well trained surgeon, he quickly dug in, grabbed the toy, put the bag back into the cereal box and “closed ‘er up”. Then it hit me…At what point did we become too old to get goodies in the things we purchase? … Continue reading On Specially Marked Boxes

I Got Punk’d

Chalk one up for the department of motor vehicles! A few months ago, I was informed that I was going to receive a company car. Let me start by saying that I count it a blessing in the age of $3 gasoline, to have someone else pick up the tab on my weekly travels. It was also pretty nice to drive off of the lot in a car with a whopping total of 5 miles on it! I am probably a bit spoiled but the make and model are a brand I have never been real fond of. I will … Continue reading I Got Punk’d

Out of the Mouths of Babes

After our T-ball practice got rained on this evening, I performed my civic duty and ran to the local elementary school to vote. I had my 5 year old son with me so of course, I had to explain that voting as “picking the people that you like”. Feeling like a great dad for letting my boy see the whole process (including standing in the booth with me while I made my selections), we gladly accepted our “I Voted Today” stickers like badges of honor. Then came the best line I have heard in a while. I don’t know if … Continue reading Out of the Mouths of Babes

Welcome to Monday!

Well here it is…Monday. In Greek mythology, the great King Sisyphus was condemned to spend the rest of his life rolling a large bolder to the top of a mountain, only to see it roll back down to the bottom again. Each day he would perform the same task….for eternity. Sounds like a Monday to me! I thought of Sisyphus yesterday as I picked up our children from the various Sunday School classes. Due to the “Christmas and Easter” crowd at church, the classrooms were overflowing with little one’s. My 3 year old had over 20 little people in her class alone! Think … Continue reading Welcome to Monday!

A Little Dumber With Each Post

While computers were designed to make us smarter and more efficient, I think I am actually regressing with each tap on the keyboard. You see, I recently left the creature comforts of Blogger.com, which included the safety net of a spell checker, for the “smarter” WordPress. While I love the capabilities of the software, posting has become a real adventure. Let me explain. Without a spell checker, I am forced to copy the entire post into something like Word, Outlook, Gmail or Yahoo mail. The next step is to run the post through their spell check to find all of the … Continue reading A Little Dumber With Each Post

Being Colorblind

I recently received an email from a well wishing friend inviting me to play a cool on-line game. I clicked on the link and found myself staring at a game that featured colors and shapes. The friend, remembering my “condition” followed up with a quick email today that was simply titled “sorry”. You see, my friend remembered that I am what you would call colorblind. Maybe you have always wanted to know what it’s like to be colorblind. Well, let me give you a couple of quick insights. 1. Whoever created the game Candy Land was obviously not colorblind. There … Continue reading Being Colorblind

From Valentines Day – 1986

To Whom it May Concern, I thought maybe I would compile a Valentine wish list this year. First off, I would really like to have A Valentine! Strike That……make it 3!! While you are at it, could you possibly make them all blondes? One other request would be blue eyes. It would be great if they could be with me all of the time. If you have any wishes left over, could you throw in a little brother? I would be forever grateful. Sincerely…..Lonely on Valentines Day 1986. Dear Lonely, Thank you for your letter. It was great to hear … Continue reading From Valentines Day – 1986

State Of The Blog Address

Mr. Conrad, Mrs. Vice President Conrad, Members of the Conrad household, Members of WordPress, Blogger and typepad, distinguished visitors and fellow bloggers. Today I sit before you, typing on my laptop, humbled by the opportunity to do so. I am also thankful that someone out there reads it. So tonight I return the favor by giving you the State of the Blog address (applause from both sides of the aisle) What started one year ago as an on-line journal has grown into this crazy thing. We started with blogger, went to typepad, back to blogger, dabbled with MSN spaces and … Continue reading State Of The Blog Address

Blinking Part II

Call off the search party, return the generators, reassure the children, tell everyone at the North Pole…The Great Christmas Light Display Mystery has been solved. Thanks in part to the comment from faithful blog reader and the man who saved Christmas this year, Mark Calahan. As you can see from the photo, the source of my frustration all week turned out to be that little red button on the outlet to the left. Now before you all go thinking I am a COMPLETE idiot….let me just give you some insight into WHERE this little white box from you-know-where was hiding. … Continue reading Blinking Part II

The Little One’s Aren’t Blinking..

We have all seen it…Chevy Chase has just finished putting every possible Christmas light on his house, the family gathered in the front yard, he plugs it in for the big moment and…and…nothing. He spends a better portion of the movie trying to get his lights to work. Only to find out that the little switch in the garage wasn’t turned on.. So there I was…rain coming down, wind blowing like crazy and lights everywhere. Lights on the bushes, lighted wreaths on each side of the door, all very tastefully done. Extension cords – check, wind proofed – check, snow … Continue reading The Little One’s Aren’t Blinking..

This Is Your Life

First the good news. The degenerative disc (see “Not How I Pictured It”) seems to respond to walking on the treadmill and stretching every morning. It has now become a staple of my lifestyle. Look, I am not crazy about it, but if it means I can put on my socks and tie my shoes in the morning, then so be it. Now….the rest of the story…. I had the ol’ MP3 player blasting some tunes while I was stretching and a song by the group “Switchfoot” came thumping through the headset. As I was lying face down on the … Continue reading This Is Your Life

Not How I Pictured It

The day that I had been wishing would never come arrived this week. A visit to my friendly neighborhood chiropractor to review some x-rays confirmed what I probably already knew. Nothing more than some degenerative disc damage. In one brief statement, my basketball and softball playing days more than likely came to a screeching halt. The moment begged the question, so I gripped my seat and asked it….”So Doc, what about sports?” Then came the most profound and amazing medical response I have ever heard…. He said “Well if it hurts….don’t do it”. Amazing. Astounding. Years and years of medical … Continue reading Not How I Pictured It

I’m Not Just The President

Thanks to guys like Andre Agassi, Bruce Willis and good ol’ Mr. Clean himself, I don’t have to be a member of “The Hair Club for Men”. As I was shaving my head yesterday morning, I was reminded how very cool it is to be bald. I got to thinking about the old days and some of the hairstyles that came and went. Back in the 80’s there were some great styles. It all started with the “Bowl Cut”. Then came “The Tail”, which eventually evolved into “The Mullet”. Thanks to bands like Duran Duran and Howard Jones, “The Mullet” … Continue reading I’m Not Just The President

Weekend Warriors

It seemed like a good idea at the time. For several weeks now, some of the boys and I have been planning a belated bachelor party for one Mr. Joel Nussbaum. Now before you get any ideas, it was nothing wild and crazy. Just a day set aside for a couple of games of paintball. Before we go any further, I must explain that my last experience with paint ball ended with a quarter sized welt just above my eyes and in the middle of my forehead. While it hurt and looked a bit silly, I have gotten a ton … Continue reading Weekend Warriors

Tiger Who?

After a long couple of weeks and some extensive travel, I was ready for a little “R and R” tonight. My son and I cruised on over to the local outdoor fun park for an overpriced “boys night out”. After conquering the “kiddie track” we were headed to the fast track. We gave them our tickets and strapped ourselves into the number 3, yellow, “M&M’s” car. I must admit, that thing handles like it’s on rails! Having our fill of the need for speed, we slowed things down by tackling a quick 18 holes of “putt putt”. Since the boy … Continue reading Tiger Who?

Rounded Third and Headed Where???

There has become a new disturbing trend in recreational softball. It seems the new thing is that when a homerun is hit over the fence, you no longer have to run the bases. You just have to run to first base, step on it and head back to the bench for high fives. Well I am here today to put a stop to it! I am going to start a petition, to get the homerun trot re-instated into the game! Especially for those of us that hit an occasional one or two per career. How can you hit a homerun … Continue reading Rounded Third and Headed Where???

The Older I Get….

Don’t send your cards and gifts (yet), today is not my birthday. Actually there are still about 6 weeks left until that momentous occasion. However, as we steamroll towards that halfway point to the big 4-0 (ouch), I have been reflecting on how the older I get the more some things make sense. This is just a random list of some of the things that have become more clear to me. THE OLDER IT GET…. 1. The more I understood why my dad shut off lights in rooms that no one was in. Closed doors when the Heat/AC was on … Continue reading The Older I Get….

Mr. Monday Update

Many of the “regulars” to the blog know that I often speak of the amazing power that this thing seems to have. I reference something and BOOM, it happens. Well I should have known that Monday’s post (The Voice of Truth) would be no different! There it was, the moment athletes wait for (even the recreational ones). The game on the line and you control the teams destiny. Last night our team struggled through 7 innings. We were down 6 to 3 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Next thing you know we are down 6-5 and the tying … Continue reading Mr. Monday Update
